Wesley Lawrence McCoy passed away Friday morning, December 25, 2015 in Tulsa. He was born January 27, 1935 in Memphis, TN, the son of Harlan E. and Gladys C. (Coggin) McCoy. McCoy graduated from Memphis Central High School in 1953 and later received a B.M. Ed. and PhD. from Louisiana State University, where he served as student body President of the School of Music. He also received a M.M. Ed. from the University of Louisville and a M.S. M. from Southern Baptist Seminary. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Mu Alpha.
An educator, McCoy began his career as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of the Bands at Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. He later taught at the University of South Carolina and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He came to Phillips University in Enid, OK in 1980 where he served as Professor of Music and Chairman of the Music Department. He played the French horn in symphonies in Baton Rouge, LA, Columbia, SC, Little Rock, AR, and Enid, OK.
In 1985, Wesley and his wife June opened Travel Agents International, which later became Carlson-Wagonlit Travel in Oklahoma City. While in Oklahoma City, he started the L.S.U. Alumni Chapter and was a member and past President of the Professional Businessmen's Association. After retirement in 2002, McCoy moved to Baton Rouge, LA.
McCoy leaves behind June McCoy of Edmond, OK; daughter Jill Kurtz and husband Rick of Tulsa; son Scott E. McCoy of Washington, D.C.; and three grandchildren: Brynne, Griffin, and Ryan Kurtz.
A private funeral service was held at the Schaudt-Teel Funeral Service in Tulsa. Entombment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, TN.
