Walter Gene Owen

Walter Gene Owen, "Gene O," passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, at the age of 71.

Gene was born on September 28, 1950 in Fresno, California to his parents, William and Ila (Tipton) Owen. During his early childhood the family moved to Oklahoma and then settled in Glenpool. Gene attended Glenpool Schools and would have graduated with the class of 1969 however, he joined the Army before graduation.

Gene proudly served our country as a specialist four in the United States Army. Shortly after basic training he was sent to Vietnam in April of 1969, where he worked as an engineer. On October 15,1969 he was hit with a mortar round while doing dozer work. He received a Purple Heart for his injuries and sacrifice. After healing from his afflictions he finished his service and was honorably discharged in 1976.

Gene was an active member in the Glenpool community in the 1980's. He owned a wallpaper store in Glenpool and served on the Chamber of Commerce. Gene also took part in Black Gold Days and other events in town. Additionally, he was also a very active member of the local VFW at that time. He went into business with a long time friend who owned an AC moving and storage company in Tulsa. While he was a carrier for Wheaton Van Lines he met his wife, Janice.

Gene and Janice were married in December of 1986. They blended their family and eventually moved back to Glenpool. Gene worked as a truck driver for various trucking companies before starting his own Pilot Car Service in 1996 where he made many friends in the industry before retiring in 2019.

He had a love of working outside, fishing and being on the lake. He loved his grandchildren and the show Yellowstone. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by everyone who loved him.

He is preceded in death by his father, William Owen SR., Brother William Owen Jr., and Brother Danny Owen

Gene leaves many loving memories with his family, wife Janice Owen of Glenpool; mother Ila Owen of Sapulpa; son Michael Owen and his wife Lauren of Jenks; daughter Shannon Edison and her husband Jeremy of Glenpool; daughter Tracy Brown and her husband Stan of Kiefer; son Michael Holybee and his wife Katy of Muskogee ; sister Susie Daniels and husband Wayne of Sapulpa; sister Leona Taylor and husband Rodger of Pawhuska; granddaughter Jessica HolyBee; granddaughter Haley Brown; grandson Hunter Brown; granddaughter Cheyenne Edison; granddaughter Makayla Edison; granddaughter Kamryn Bina; grandson Sam HolyBee; granddaughter Stella Edison;granddaughter McKenzi Owen grandson Fisher Edison; ; granddaughter Isabella HolyBee; Along with 6 great grandchildren. and many nieces and nephews.

At Gene's request in lieu of a service there will be a Celebration of Life "Party" held at his home on Sunday August 14, 2022 at 2:00pm located at 5751 W. 171st Street, Keifer, OK 74041. Please join us with stories and great times you shared with Gene.
