Verona Lee Swank, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, at the age of 85. Born on November 29, 1939, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Martin and Laura Roe; Verona lived a life full of love, faith, and adventure.
Verona married the love of her life, Jimmy Swank, in 1958, shortly after he returned from military service. Together, they built a beautiful life, rooted in partnership, devotion, and family. Jimmy preceded her in death in 2021, but their legacy of love continues in the family they created and cherished. Verona was also preceded in death by her brother, Martin Abraham Roe, Jr and her parents.
Verona is survived by her three children, Donna Gail Swank, Cindy Moore (Rob), and Eric Swank (Donna). She was a proud and doting grandmother to Ashlee Moore, Doug Moore, Damon Swank (Emily), Nique Sharp (Blake), Kaitlyn Verity (Kyle), Peyton Clarke (Rachael), and Chandler Angelitti (Eli). She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy. Verona's sister, Sharon Tate, held a special place in her heart and survives her as well.
A graduate of Rogers High School in Tulsa, Verona began her journey as a young bride with big dreams. She and Jimmy settled in Pryor, where they started a business together. While Jimmy ran the business, Verona made their house a home, raising their children with love, discipline, and a touch of humor. She was a cool mom, an incredible cook, and a masterful bridge player who could charm and outplay anyone at the table.
Verona had an adventurous spirit and a passion for travel. She and Jimmy explored the world together, creating memories in places like Germany, Switzerland, and Mexico. She loved Germany especially, a place tied to Jimmy's military service, and cherished trips to the horse races, where her knack for picking winners was legendary. Later in life, she delighted in traveling with her girlfriends, adding even more joy to a life well-lived.
After ensuring all her children graduated from college, Verona embarked on a new adventure, starting her own clothing store. She poured her heart into the business, bringing the same energy and creativity that defined her life. Verona came from humble beginnings but created a life filled with love, laughter, and countless blessings for herself and her family.
Verona was a woman of faith who attended church every Sunday and looked forward to reuniting with her beloved Jimmy in Heaven. She had a soft spot for animals, especially her dogs-each one a cherished companion, even the occasionally mischievous Casey. Her home was a sanctuary where everyone felt welcome, fed, and loved. She believed in teaching manners, sharing love, and ensuring her family thrived.
Verona often said she lived the best life she could have asked for, and those who knew her would agree. Her legacy is one of love, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a cause close to Verona's heart. Services will be private, honoring her wish for a quiet celebration of her remarkable life.
