Tommy Lee Bennett

December 29, 1949 — April 29, 2017

Tommy Lee Bennett, 67, died on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Brookdale at Cedar Ridge, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was born December 29, 1949 in Borger, Texas to Thomas Leroy and Alma (Lawrence) Bennett. He was the youngest of three, and the only son. Tommy graduated from Nowata High School with honors. He married Joanne (Newhart) Bennett in 1971 in Nowata, Oklahoma. The two of them lived in many states while he served as a Stenographer in the U.S. Army, part of the 902d Military Intelligence Group. His commander wrote, during Bennett's assignment to this Branch, he displayed qualities of leadership and dedication to duty that make a truly outstanding professional soldier. He brought credit upon himself and his personal efforts above and beyond his assigned duties and have significantly contributed to the mission accomplishment of the 902d MI Group.
After the military, he and Joanne relocated to Tulsa and had two daughters. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier. Despite his many dog bites while on the job, he continued to rescue the stray dogs. Tom received many Good Samaritan Awards, even saving a lady from dying. Throughout his career, he gave many dogs, each weighing over 100 lbs, a new home. He enjoyed watching baseball and always cheered for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was an avid music lover and disc jockey. His family will always remember his upbeat, easy go lucky personality and his love for helping others.
He is preceded in death by parents, Thomas Leroy and Alma (Lawrence) Bennett; sisters, Reta Jo Mitchell and Patty Edmondson; and many canine companions he rescued over the years.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne (Newhart) Bennett of the home; daughters, Brandy Bennett and Clay Coffman of Glenpool, OK, and Kristy Zigler and Joe Pruitt of Glenpool, OK; grandchildren, Kaci Pruitt and Jake Fuller; loyal canine companion, Layla; and many family members. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to give a special thanks to all of those who helped care for Tom over the past few years; Hospice of Green Country for your compassion, the caregivers of the Veteran's Center in Claremore, Alzheimer's Organization and to Life Senior Services of Tulsa. We would not have been able to do it without each and every one of you.
