Theodore Reed Stunkard, age 82, succumbed to cancer November 4, 2004 at 12:30 a.m. at home with his wife and daughters by his side. He was born in Wichita, Kansas, August 18, 1922 to George R. and Edith (Pee Wee) Stunkard. He was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1941, and attended Oklahoma Military Academy until World War II, at which time he joined the Army.
Mr. Stunkard was honorably discharged following a stateside injury. He then pursued a singing and acting career. For the next five years, he toured with well-known big bands such as Red Nickles and the Five Pennies and landed small parts in major motion pictures.
He married the former Jeanne Montgomery in 1949 and they had three daughters; Monica, Shelley and Theda. He worked in the family business, Greenlease-Stunkard Cadillac. He and his brother, Sam, owned and operated Stunkard Brothers Motors in Vinita, Oklahoma. He took early retirement in 1974 and entered the Episcopal Theological Seminary becoming an ordained priest in 1977.
He was an accomplished athlete, lettering in swimming, track and boxing; however, he had a life long passion for the game of golf. He won numerous awards and trophies, had 3 holes-in-one, and though he claimed he couldn't hack it anymore, he was still tearin' it up until the end. For the last 17 years, he worked as a starter for Page Belcher Golf Course.
Mr. Stunkard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanne, and his daughters; Monica Welch and husband, Joe and their 2 sons; Shelley Latta and her two sons; Theda Brinckerhoff and husband, Scott and their 3 daughters. He will be dearly missed by his family and his many, many friends.
Graveside memorial services will be held on Monday, November 8, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, Oklahoma with The Reverend John Norris officiating.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Daniel C. Schaudt of Schaudt's Glenpool Funeral Service & Cremation Care. Family and friends may view the obituary and send condolences to the family online at www.schaudtfuneralservice.com
