Stephen (Steve) Milton Kennedy, 88, of Dallas, TX went home to be with the Lord on August 15, 2014. He was born in Atlanta, KS, the youngest of nine children. He was a husband, father, step-father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Anna Kennedy of Atlanta, KS, his brothers and sisters, and step-daughter (Leonora E. Keel). He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Kennedy, his children, Michael S. (wife Susan K.), Francella J. Keller, Jimmy R. (wife Patricia J.), Larry K., Mark A. (wife Debra A), his step-sons, James Olson (wife Margaret), Dr. Patrick C. Olson (wife Dr. Donna M. Schaeffer), 18 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 5 great, great, grandchildren.
He grew up on the family farm in Piedmont, KS and had many stories to tell everyone who would listen especially about the cantankerous mules who wouldn’t mind anyone but him.
At the age of 17 on August 13, 1943 he left the family farm to join the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at San Diego, CA, Oceanside, CA, Pearl Harbor, TH, and Port Hueneme, CA. He was a Corpsman and Petty Officer 3rd Class. While serving he attended Hospital Corp School. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged on August 4, 1947.
He began his career as a truck driver with Beech Aircraft in Wichita, KS and remained at Beech Aircraft until 1969. During his time with Beech Aircraft he learned many aspects of the production line and became a top troubleshooter for the landing gear on several aircraft models. Those who knew his expertise on landing gear fondly called him Mr. Beechcraft.
He was first and foremost a father who taught his children to camp, fish, and enjoy outdoor life. He raised his children to be strong, think for themselves, stand on their own two feet, and take responsibility for their actions. Family was important to Steve and many weekends during the summer were spent with his children at their grandmother’s house helping with maintaining her yard and garden.
He left Wichita in 1969 and relocated to Dallas, TX. He continued as a truck driver for many years traveling throughout the United States delivering trailers, lumber, furniture, and many other goods. Several of Steve’s sons worked or rode with him on many trips across country.
In his retirement years he was able to use the wood working tools he loved so much. He carved custom walking canes which he shared with family and friends. He was an avid gardener and love to tend to his flower garden. He was an active member of The Nor'kirk Presbyterian Church, Carrollton, TX where he enjoyed cooking fellowship dinners. He was a kind and generous person who devoted his time to helping the homeless, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and going on various mission trips. He took his sons to Mo Ranch and several of his grandchildren to build homes for Habitat for Humanity.
Steve had a big heart and touched everyone’s life in many loving ways. His family and friends will miss him, but have great stories to tell that will bring a smile to their faces and a laugh shared by all.
