Stella Louise Lewis (née Thornburg)

Mrs. Stella Louise Lewis, 89, a long-time resident of Okmulgee, died Wednesday, October 19th, in Tulsa. She was born in Beggs, Oklahoma on April 7, 1933, the younger of two daughters, to Robert and Lucy (Messer) Thornburg.

As a child, Stella loved horses, animals and sports. While attending Beggs High School, she was a majorette and star player on the girls' basketball team.

It was there she met her future husband, James ("Jim") Andrew Lewis. Jim and Stella wed in Beggs, and were married over 70 years until his death in 2019.

The family moved to Okmulgee in 1953. At various times, Stella owned and operated a cosmetology shop out of her home and was an active member of the Okmulgee "Red Hats". She is a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Morris OK and was a founding member and social director of the "OWLS" (Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors) group at the church.

She is survived by her children: son, Doug Lewis and his wife Shelley of Windermere, FL; son, Darrell Lewis and his wife Traci of Okmulgee, OK; grandchildren Courtney Lewis Beattie and husband Jason of Winter Garden, FL, Whitney Lewis of Windermere, FL, Brian Lewis and wife Sandy of Wasilla, AK; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Bobby Bruce Lewis, and by both parents and an older sister, Helen.

Funeral service will be held 2:00PM Monday, October 24th at the Chapel at Schaudt's Funeral Service in Okmulgee with Pastor Kendell Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Mounds, OK.
