Born Shirley Mize October 13, 1928, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Oscar and Nona Mize.
Shirley was a mother of two children when she attended Oklahoma City University at age 29. She earned a BA double degree in 1961 in speech-drama and Spanish at age 33 and later earned her master's in education. She evaluated teachers and school systems, and chose Spanish textbooks for the State of Oklahoma.
In 1981 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at age 53. After the diagnosis she fell on her face, gave her life to the Lord and said “my life has not counted for anything.” She asked God to heal her and vowed to serve him and He healed her.
She started AOP, and founded AOM, a media ministry of radio and TV. Her ministry went around the world via radio and she began her travels to Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados and Canada.
Trinidad was the highlight of her life. She began her Trinidad ministry in one small church of 25 people that met under a carport with barking dogs and drug dealers in the yard. The ministry has branched out to numerous churches along with a ministry to pastors and ministers.
After her eyesight began to fail due to macular degeneration she closed her business, sold her home and moved to University Village in Tulsa in 2000, where she became an Associate Chaplin.
Survivors include two children, Harry Ric Hedges and Crystal Raye Marvel, three grandchildren, Amanda Hedges Meyer, Justin Marvel and Shawna Marvel Pearson, and one great granddaughter, Rylee Marvel.
