Sherri Monnet Collier Finik died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on April 5, 2010 after a lengthy illness.
A talented artist, she was born on March 16, 1948 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to J. C. and Shirley Blanchard Collier, and she grew up painting, playing violin and organ, and loving all things French. She graduated from Oklahoma University with masters degrees in French and Social Work. She was a courageous supporter of women's rights as the Director of the Reproductive Services Women's Clinic in Tulsa, Oklahoma during a twenty year period of anti-choice protests and violence, some of which came dangerously close to her and her family. Throughout those times, she resolutely met her opposition, not with hatred or malevolence, but with a generous and respectful approach which helped defuse many hostile situations and kept her community from being torn up over this contentious issue. Her attitude was rooted in her lifelong devotion to her Christian Science faith. She was active in legislative lobby efforts on behalf of women's rights and choice, and she was particularly interested in adoption, serving on a subcommittee that regulated and modernized much of the adoption law and practice in Oklahoma. In 1999, she began supervising National Resource Center for Youth Services staff responsible for OKDHS foster parent training, and she devotedly worked there until illness prevented her from continuing.
Sherri was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband: Stephen Hobbs; three daughters: Lisa Finik Nobles and son in-law, Scot, of Los Angeles, California; Valerie Finik Smrt and son in-law, Damien of San Diego, California; Lauren Finik of San Diego, California along with three step-children: Kevin Hobbs and daughter in-law Penny of Greene, New York; Nathan Hobbs and daughter in-law, Maggie of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Valerie Hadden Hobbs of Denton, Texas. She was the proud grandmother of Aidric Scot Nobles and Woodrow Xavier Hobbs.
Memorial service will be held Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reverend Debra Garfinkel will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to Tulsa Advocates For The Protection of Children (TAPC).
