Rusty Russell

May 5, 1956 — March 27, 2023

Rusty Russell; born May 5, 1956 in Casper, Wyoming, died in Tulsa on March 27, 2023 from lung cancer.

Rusty was a gifted professional writer and photographer, but his passion was music, especially jazz guitar. He was a touring musician, proficient song writer and a teacher/mentor of aspiring artists in Nashville.

In his 35-year career he recorded with distinguished performers, wrote for the Grand Ole Opry and was the Nashville Editor at Guitar Player Magazine. Among his achievements, Rusty was honored to improve the field for all musicians through volunteer work in the Nashville Musicians Association (AFM Local 257). A very special person, Rusty's unique communication abilities coupled with his love of teaching and marvelous wit brought joy and confidence to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lynn Questell, sister Marcie McKenzie, nephew James McKenzie and James' wife Apryl.
