Ronald D. Salt left this world Sunday, May 24, 2020, surrounded by his wife Betty and daughter, Jennifer, to get back to his true passion, fishing. He is probably also figuring out his next “Dad Joke” so we can all roll our eyes.
Ron was raised in Grand Island, New York where he enjoyed fishing and hunting and getting into general youngster mischief. He and his friends still kept in touch over the years and would enjoy laughing about the stories of their adventures. He attended Tonawanda, NY high school where he excelled in sports, especially cross country and track. He was awarded “Most Physically Fit” several years during his high school career. His love of running continued through the years earning him the nickname “Runs Like Lightning” from co-workers who would watch him on his lunch-hour runs in Las Colinas, TX. He also placed first in his age group in a Race for The Cure, and ran in many Allen & Tulsa 5K’s.
He was drafted into the Army in 1965 where he served in Vietnam in the First Calvary as a Medic. Although he didn’t like to talk about his time in the service, he was highly decorated earning two bronze stars, one including valor and a silver star, among other awards and recommendations.
Ron married his wife Betty Jane Little in in Lewistown, NY. Once he left the Army he started on college, graduating with a degree in Computer Science from West Texas State in Canyon, Texas. Ron & Betty moved around until finally landing in North East, PA where they lived for many years. Ron loved fishing at 20-Mile Creek, opting to sneak down to go fish at every opportunity.
The people he worked with over the years, from Welch’s Foods in Westville, NY to Texas Instruments, Sprint and JCPenney Corporate in Texas, one common thread that was always consistent, people respected his opinions and leadership and always had something kind to say about working with him.
Ron loved his family most of all and was fiercely protective of them. He loved being Poppa to his grandsons, Benjamin and Jack. He taught them how to fish, make a good campfire, play golf and would play with them until they were worn out.
Ron is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jane Little Salt; daughter, Jennifer M Salt; grandsons Benjamin Walker Roop and Jack Thomas Roop. We would like to thank all of the friends who have reached out to us in the past week, and we thank you for the love that you have shown our family. Ron wanted a private family ceremony which will be held at a later date.
