Richard Wallace McMahon, Jr. (Rick)
April 19, 1948 - November 10, 2024
Richard Wallace McMahon, Jr., known as "Rick" to family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024 at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Tyler, Texas, on April 19, 1948, Rick moved to Tulsa as a young boy, where he spent most of his life and left a lasting impression on the community and the people who were fortunate to know him. He was a "man's man" with a tough exterior but a heart full of love and compassion for his family, friends, and anyone in need. His grandchildren affectionately called him "Boss," a testament to his role as the anchor of his family.
Rick graduated from Cascia Hall Preparatory School in 1966 and earned his degree from the University of Tulsa. He built a successful career, running Midwest Marble with his brother and brother-in-law for many years, where he was admired for his leadership and generosity. He was known for always giving people a chance. Everyone has a story about him burned into their memory: something funny or crazy he did, an impromptu act of kindness, making people feel included, or offering sage life advice.
Rick had many passions and hobbies, living life to the fullest in everything he did. Despite being born with a disability-one leg shorter than the other-he never let it define him, nor would you ever hear him complain. It fueled his drive to accomplish even more, whether excelling at skeet shooting- becoming a state champion and nationally ranked competitor, or taking on adventures like snow skiing, water skiing, and competitive motorcycle and car racing. He loved being outdoors, hunting, golfing, and, most of all, teaching those he loved to find joy in these adventures - always teaching the younger generation how to water ski, shoot guns, call ducks, or do donuts in the snow.
Rick's love of the outdoors was most apparent at Big Lake, which held deep meaning throughout his life. It was where his father first taught him the art of hunting and respect for nature, a tradition Rick later passed on to his children and grandchildren. On the eve of a hunt, he loved cooking a big meal of duck-a-bobs and wild rice for everyone to enjoy. We will never forget him sitting on the shore of the lake, cocktail in hand, watching the ducks come in at sunset.
Rick was a devoted dog lover, always accompanied by a loyal hunting companion. His dogs were a constant source of joy; he took pride in training them with patience and care. These faithful friends enriched his life, and now he is reunited with them again in Heaven.
Rick's love for golf and camaraderie was a defining part of his life. He cherished the friendships he built at Southern Hills Country Club. Whether on the course or relaxing with friends in the clubhouse, Rick's presence was always felt. He forged many special friendships, playing cards and joining his 505 buddies on Friday afternoons.
One of Rick's greatest joys was sharing his passion for racing with his son, Jason. Together, they spent many days at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. Whether it was the thrill of a lap around the track or the camaraderie they shared in the pit, racing together was a unique chapter in their relationship.
Rick took great pride in his family and viewed them as his most outstanding achievement. Alongside the love of his life, they raised a close-knit family of three kids and eight grandkids.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Janet (Coenen) McMahon; daughter Lori and son-in-law Todd Gallop, along with their children Gavin and Raegan; son Jason and daughter-in-law Sara McMahon, along with their children Max, Jack, and Grace; and daughter Jaime and son-in-law Brad Dunlap, with their children Tatum, Bo, and Finley. In addition, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Carle and Ann McMahon, and his sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Steve Ferguson.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Wallace "Dick" McMahon and Bobbie Lou (Landers) McMahon Gentry, and his "second father," Jack Walker Gentry, whom he loved and respected deeply.
The family will hold a celebration of life to honor Rick's legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tulsa Chapter of Meals on Wheels, where he volunteered for many years until he could no longer physically do so.
Rick left a mark on this world. He was a man who loved fiercely, lived fully, and gave selflessly. His passing leaves a void in everyone who knew him, but we all take great comfort in knowing he is now doing wheelies in the sky. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
