Owen Elwyn Cochran, affectionately known as "Spike," passed away peacefully on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the age of 87, with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 24, 1937, in Santa Ana, California, to John and Ruth (Melven) Cochran. A man of grit, humor, and immense love for his family, Spike's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Spike's early years were shaped in California, where he attended Huntington Beach High School. It was here he learned the craft of brick masonry, a skill passed down from his brothers. After spending many years in California, Spike and his family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1969, seeking respite from the bustle of the Golden State and its infamous traffic.
In 1972, after a brief courtship, Spike married the love of his life, Marsha Lynne Richard, in Tulsa. Together, they built a beautiful life. Sadly, Marsha preceded him in death on June 14, 2022.
Spike's professional life was defined by his dedication to the craft of masonry. For over 55 years, he owned and operated Spike Masonry, where he bricked thousands of custom homes across the Tulsa area. His work earned him a reputation for quality, with some of his projects even featured in Better Homes and Gardens. He was a man who took pride in his work and cherished the relationships he built throughout his career.
A passionate outdoorsman, Spike loved fishing, boating, camping, and water skiing. He once skied in a slalom competition that spanned more than 30 miles, from Huntington Beach to Catalina Island. His adventurous spirit extended to his love for "hopping ponds," a pastime he enjoyed deeply. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Spike's family was his world. He is survived by his children, Kim Hackbirth, Kris Hackbirth, Peggi Harrell-Vigil, Kay Perry, and John Cochran; his beloved sisters, Betty (Elizabeth) Montgomery and Helen Jackson; and his 10 grandchildren: Brad Hackbirth, Kari Oare, Kristen Melancon, Jake Hackbirth, Ashley Wilson, Kendra Liscom, Kylie Bailey, Madison Campbell, Lauren Sullivan, and Johnathan Cochran. Owen was also a proud grandfather to 18 great-grandchildren.
Spike was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Cochran, and his siblings: Anthony Melven, Verda Cochran, Ray Cochran, Jim Cochran, John Cochran, Mack (Walter) Cochran, Vada Ruth Cochran, Violet (Vi) Cochran, and Marjorie Cochran.
Known for his sense of humor and his storytelling, Spike never met a stranger. His friends and family will always remember his infectious smile and the wisdom he so freely shared. Whether he was at the Elm Street Pub playing spoons, singing karoke or offering advice, he was always the life of the party, leaving everyone with a laugh and a memory.
Spike's passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed,
but his spirit, his stories, and his legacy will live on in the love he gave to his family and friends.
You will forever be in our hearts as a loving, Pawpaw, Papa, Grandpa Cochran, and Grandpa Spike. We miss your smile, your voice, and your unending love.
