Michael Leroy Mattke of Glenpool, Oklahoma peacefully passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at age 67. Michael was born in Waverly, Iowa to Norman and Irma Mattke on the 9th of January, 1951.
As a child, one of Mike’s favorite things to do was to go fishing with his dad, and he also loved to get up early in the morning and go buy a hamburger at the local store that they could enjoy for lunch. As he got a little bit older he got into wrestling and had a stock car that he loved to drive. His mom Irma won a pony one year, when Michael was riding, it loved to find low hanging branches and try to knock him off his back.
He graduated in Waverly, Iowa in 1969 and joined the Navy right out of school. In the Navy, he supplied other ships with supplies and fuel. Mike and his other brothers in arms took turns being the radio DJ. He was supposed to play country music, but Mike just wasn't having that. He was going to play rock music, what he loved and his time as DJ earned him the name “Psychedelic Shit Kicker”. He is a Vietnam Veteran and served in the Navy for 2 years, 1 month and 16 days, until he was discharged and released from active duty and transferred to the United States Navy Reserve in July of 1971. At that time he had been awarded 4 medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
After serving in the Navy, Mike met the love of his life, his wife Jane. They fell in love and got married on June 18, 1972. They were married for 46 years. One of Michael’s most memorable times was when he, and all of the family, took a trip to Disney World in Florida. This was a trip that they all got the chance to go on together before his oldest son, Chris, graduated high school. He loved when the family got together around the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas were his favorites, and he loved being Santa for the neighborhood and going around yelling “HoHoHo Merry Christmas!!” or “Da Bears” very loudly, and you always knew it was him.
When hanging around his family and wasting time with his friends he loved to be fishing or taking the boat out and making campfires for all the family to enjoy. You could always catch him dancing and ready to show you a good time full of laughs. Mike lived for the Chicago Bears…”Da Bears” he loved to say!! He enjoyed talking and being with people and could literally make friends with anyone that he met. If there were five words that could describe Mike…Positive, Friendly, and Happy Go Lucky!
Mike, or “Papa” as he was known to his grandsons, enjoyed them so much and was so very proud of them. He loved doing things with them, everything from planting trees to dancing with them on the back patio. Whenever he could, he was pulling out pictures of them to show them to whoever would take the time to look and show them what they were doing.
Michael is preceded in death by parents Norman and Irma Mattke.
Michael is survived by his wife Jane Mattke of 46 years; son Christopher Mattke and daughter-in-law Charity; son Neal Mattke and daughter-in-law Jessica; sisters Judy Miller and Mary Sevey; brother Dennis Mattke and his wife Beth; and grandsons Cade Mattke and Kash Mattke.
