Melanie Dawn Fixico-Locust passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2012 in Okemah at the age of 38. She was born February 25, 1974 to Benny Fixico and Rose (Starr) Fixico in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Melanie received her Associate Degree of Business Administration from Sipi Indian College in New Mexico and was studying to receive her Bachelor’s Degree. She loved spending time with her family and friends and loved being around her children and grandson. She enjoyed playing horse shoes, bowling, and visiting family in Oklahoma and she loved the Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys football teams. Melanie wanted her family to remember the good and fun times they spent together and that she will always be in their hearts. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rose Starr Fixico; sister, Stephanie Fixico; brother, Steven Fixico; grandmother, Lena Taylor Starr and grandfather, Eli Starr. Survivors include her children, Whitlea Bell, Alexander Mitchell and Alena Mitchell, all of Okmulgee; father, Benny Fixico of Okemah; brothers, Ronnie Fixico of Albuquerque, NM and Dennis Taylor of Muskogee and grandson, Aidyn Fixico of Okmulgee and other numerous relatives and friends. Wake Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Prairie Springs Indian Baptist Church in Okemah. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the Prairie Springs Indian Baptist Church in Okemah with Reverend Richard Fixico and Reverend Mitchell Taylor officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Starr Family Cemetery in Henryetta under the direction of the Shurden-Jackson Funeral Home in Okmulgee. Pallbearers will be Benny Fixico, Jr., Chris Fixico, Steve Fixico, Dennis Taylor, Matthew Fixico and Buckey Fixico. Honorary Pallbearers will be James Starr, Jerry Reagon, Keith Phillips, John Billie and Shannon Starr.
