Maurice Duncan's love of family did not end with his death. After a courageous fight with cancer, Maury passed away on January 26, 2022 at 93. His love for his family will live on in our hearts as we continue to support each other, while always thinking of him.
Maury was born July 16, 1928 in Marshall, MO and moved to Tulsa at age 6 months. He graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1946 and Oklahoma University in 1950 with a B.S. degree in management. He later worked toward a Master's degree in accounting from Tulsa University. There, his father introduced him to the love of his life, Sara, who was working for the summer with Maury's dad. Love of football was one of many things that brought them together. They were lifelong TU and OU fans. Maury was especially crazy about OU football. If OU lost, you better leave Maury alone for a day or two while he recovered. If they won, it was a great day! The constant question was always: Is Sara an OU fan - 1) because she loves OU, or 2) because she didn't want her Maury to mope.
They married in August 1959. In Tulsa, they raised their 3 children, Nancy, Guerry, and Barbara, while Maury practiced accounting and Sara volunteered for everything.
Many of Maury's fondest memories were of coaching Nancy and Guerry's soccer teams. Each team won a state championship! What an exciting, fun time he had forging relationships with the players and their families. Many wonderful and lasting friendships were made!
Around the time he was coaching, Maury was made managing partner for the Tulsa office of Peat Marwick & Main where he served until his retirement to consulting in 1989. He was active in several local organizations, including Kiwanis, where he served as treasurer, and The Tulsa Men's Club and Tulsa Executives Association, where he served as president for both.
His golden years were spend traveling with Sara. Alaska, China, and a Mississippi River cruise were among the destinations. A Disney cruise with their kids and grandkids in 2011 was a special highlight that Maury meticulously planned for a year. His favorite getaway, though, was their annual trip to Captiva Island, FL.
Maury, Sara and the children were active members of Asbury United Methodist Church and then, as empty-nesters, of Boston Avenue. He served as Treasurer and as an usher at both churches. Maury particularly loved their Heritage Sunday School class at Boston Avenue, where they attended every Sunday until their health made it impossible to do so. We are grateful for the thoughts and prayers of their classmates.
In addition to Sara, Maury is survived by his children, Nancy, Guerry, and Barbara; his daughter-in-law, Robyn, his son-in-law, Brian; his step grandchildren, Rachel, Camille, Lizzy; grandsons, Jason, Kevin, Michael, and Colin; brother, Carl; nephew Rick; niece's Judy, Linda and Karen, and Karen's son Garrett.
Maury was the family's rock in good times and in bad. He cared for us at every turn to ensure we were set for success. His quiet example of faithfulness and fortitude will be remembered as we continue to love and encourage each other, our children and our grandchildren.
