Mary Scott

April 22, 1940 — July 6, 2024

Mary Jane Scott of Leesburg, GA, was born on April 22, 1940, in Reno County, Kansas. She passed away July 6, 2024 after living with Dementia for over seven years. She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother ("Grammie") who was always willing to help family and friends. She was smart and witty and enjoyed laughing with loved ones. Her great sense of humor continued even in the late stages of dementia and got us all through many difficult times. She was a member of St. Teresa's, St. Anthony of Padua's, and Sacred Heart Catholic Churches during her lifetime.

Mary grew up on a beautiful farm in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado where she often helped her dad Jerome Engelbrecht with the farm animals. She developed a life-long love of animals and almost always had dogs and walked them for their exercise throughout her life until she needed a cane to walk.

After graduating from Cheyenne Wells High School, Mrs. Scott attended Business School in Denver Colorado. It was here that she met her future husband JC Scott who was stationed at the Lowry Air Force Base but also worked as a Soda Jerk at the corner drugstore. They were married on March 14, 1964 in Aurora, Colorado. Mary's best friend Donna Krowen was a witness and they stayed best friends forever.

Mary and J moved to Tahlequah Oklahoma where Mary worked as a secretary for Professors (like Dr. Payton, Physics) in the science building of the Northeastern Oklahoma State College while J was getting his bachelors degree in English. Later when they moved to Forgan, Oklahoma, Mary worked as a Bank Auditor for many many years while also being a mom to son Brett C Scott, born in 1973. She worked at the bank until 1987 when the family moved to Meade, Kansas. She had a career with Dekalb as a secretary for ten years and then she later worked at the Dalton Gang Hideout Museum.

Mary and J loved to travel to England and Scotland and they loved spending time with their son and family and friends. Mary grew up attending Sacred Heart Catholic Church and even had her son Baptized there. She later was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Liberal Kansas for many many years. Mary lived in her home in Meade until early 2018 when she moved in with her son and his family in Georgia. Her good friends continued to visit and send cards and call her even with advancing dementia and she so loved their friendship. Her good friend Nancy Dye even sent her magazines and the Upper Room which we read with her until the day before she passed.

Mrs. Scott loved to play the piano and she played very beautifully and took good care of her piano. She also was an avid reader. She enjoyed traveling with her friends and family after retirement.

Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, J C Scott; her parents, Jerome and Johanna Engelbrecht; sister, Alvera Ball (Everet) brother Francis Engelbrecht (Alberta); brother Louis Engelbrecht (Joyce); brother-in-law Johnny Neff. She is survived by her sister Patty Neff; her son Brett C Scott (Erica) of Leesburg, GA and her grandchildren, Joseph Tennessee Scott of Meade, Kansas; Juliette Christie Scott of Leesburg Georgia; Jessica Marie Scott of Leesburg Georgia and Jerome Elliott Scott of Leesburg Georgia; her niece Lynda Engelbrecht; and a host of additional nieces and nephews and extended family in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado as well as many sweet friends in the Meade area.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Albany, Georgia or Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado or Georgia Hospice Care in Albany, Georgia or Alzheimer's Research Foundation or another Dementia research charity of your choice.
