Mary Alice Towers Heavner

September 9, 1932 — February 22, 2025

The kingdom of heaven has gained another beautiful angel as Mary Alice Towers Heavner left this world peacefully Saturday, February 22, 2025. Mary was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a caring friend to everyone she met. She was greeted with open arms at the gates of heaven by Christ and her loving husband who had patiently waited the last ten years for this reunion.

Mary was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on September 9, 1932, just four minutes before her identical twin sister, Marilyn. Mary grew up in Tulsa with her three sisters and was active in church, Girl Scouts and in supporting the war effort while she was in grade school. Mary's father passed away when she was 14 years old; her mother raised the four girls on her own. In high school, Mary met the love of her life, Louis W. Heavner, Jr. (Lou), and she often said that it was love at first sight. She attended Tulsa University for one year, where she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, before convincing her mother to let her transfer to Oklahoma A & M where Lou was enrolled. She graduated early with her Home Economics degree.

On August 29, 1953, Mary and Lou were married at The First United Methodist Church of Tulsa. While Lou was still attending OSU Veterinary School, their first son, Louis, III was born. Mary and Lou moved their young family to Purcell, OK for a short time before moving to Norman, OK, where their two other children, Will and Sandy, were born. Mary was initiated into P.E.O. in 1965 and became a very active and lifelong member of this Philanthropic Educational Organization, whose mission is to help women around the world advance through education. In 1967, Mary and Lou ventured to New Orleans, LA to start a new veterinary practice and remained there until retirement. Mary supported the family business by keeping the books for the practice. Together, they grew to love the people of New Orleans, the local traditions, and the NFL Saints! Mary took pleasure in hosting family and friends and especially enjoyed serving her guests new recipes. She was a charter member of a new P.E.O. Chapter (AL) while in New Orleans and was very active at both the local and state levels. She was a lifetime member of the AVMA Women's Auxiliary of which she held several state wide offices. She served as a Girl Scout leader for her daughter's troop, taught first grade for one year, and worked as a secretary for a family business, but her greatest love was being a lifetime homemaker. Upon retirement, in 1999, they moved to Navarre Beach, FL. It was their idea of paradise and for them, a little slice of heaven on earth. Lou passed away in 2015, but Mary remained in Navarre Beach for several years. Following the Covid pandemic, she moved to Edmond, OK to be near her daughter, Sandy.

Mary made lifelong friends wherever she lived. Her ever-present smile, infectious laugh and good nature made her a natural for establishing long-lasting friendships. She was active in the Methodist Church wherever she resided and always sang in the choir. Mary had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the piano.

Mary loved to sew and do handicrafts, especially for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed making Halloween and Mardi Gras costumes, smocking children's clothes, and crafting customized handmade dolls for her granddaughters. She lovingly sewed her granddaughters' baptismal gowns and her daughter's wedding gown. Mary made braided and oriental rugs and loved to do cross stitch and needle point in her spare time.

Mary was such a caring and loving lady who also enjoyed the company of good friends and family. Mary and Lou loved the beach and enjoyed inviting their family and all of their lifelong friends to enjoy it with them. Their favorite time was watching the sunset during happy hour. She loved life, loved her husband, her children, grandchildren, and all her extended family and friends. She will be greatly missed by so many.

As someone once said, "What we have enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Mary represented the very best of us and is certainly a part of all who knew and loved her. There is no doubt that Mary and her beloved Lou are once again together, sharing unlimited sunsets on the beautiful beaches of paradise.

Mary is survived by her twin sister Marilyn Williams, her children Louis, III (Cindy) of Baton Rouge, Will (Nancy) of St. Louis and Sandy Arnold (Doug) of Edmond, her grandchildren, Sadie Finke, Logan Heavner, Amanda Ketchum, Dylan Arnold, Brittany Meier, Sara Heavner, Rebecca Jarzombek, (and their spouses), Tom Heavner, David Heavner, Benjamin Heavner and Lucy Heavner, and her great-grandchildren, Nathan and Blair Heavner, Evan Finke, Jeremiah and Collette Jarzombek, Dax Arnold, Malek Aljafal, and Jacob Ketchum.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Ruth Towers, her endearing sisters Margaret Carpenter and Jean Wortley, her loving husband of 60 years Louis Heavner, Jr. and her precious great-granddaughter Emma Finke.
