Marva Joy Simmonds, a beloved member of the Broken Arrow community, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on July 1, 1933, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Joy was the cherished daughter of William and Teleta Giles.
Joy's journey through life was marked by her passion for education and creativity. She pursued her Bachelor's Degree in Education at North Texas State University, which laid the foundation for her illustrious career as a middle school teacher in Broken Arrow Schools. For 25 years, she dedicated herself to shaping young minds with care and dedication.
Beyond her career in education, Joy was a beacon of creativity, finding joy in arts and crafts. This passion led her to open her own gift shop following her retirement from teaching. Her entrepreneurial spirit and artistic flair were evident in every aspect of her life. After her chapter of owning her own business she went on to work for Dillard's for several more years after.
In matters of love, Joy found happiness in her marriage to Charles W. Simmonds, her beloved husband. They were married in Odessa, Texas on July 9, 1955. Their union was tragically cut short by Charles's passing in 1963 during an active-duty training exercise for the USAF. Despite the loss, their love endured, and Joy cherished the memories they shared. Together, they were blessed with three children: Michael Simmonds, Russell Simmonds, and Cherrie Simmonds Turner, who were a constant source of pride and joy. Joy's love also extended to her multiple grandchildren, who brought immense happiness into her life.
A woman of faith, Joy's spirit will be honored at a funeral service to be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at the Abiding Harvest Church, located at 4407 S. Olive, Broken Arrow, OK 74011. Following the service, a committal ceremony will take place at Fort Gibson National Cemetery at 12:30 PM.
Joy Simmonds leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and creativity that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community she touched with her warmth and grace.
