Martha Ann Hicks

October 3, 1934 — August 27, 2019

Martha Ann Freeny was born to Lee and Pauline Freeny on October 3, 1934 in the small town of Bromide in Johnson County, Oklahoma. Pauline was a school teacher, so Martha accompanied her mother to school at the age of 3. When she was 10, the family moved to Tulsa, taking advantage of the opportunities available in a larger city. Martha graduated from Central High School at the age of 15 and the University of Tulsa at the age of 18. At the time, Martha was the youngest graduate ever from the University of Tulsa. She was also an active member of Kappa Delta Pi.

Martha’s first job was with Bethlehem Steel. She later completed her Master’s in education and began teaching Spanish, French and English for Tulsa Public Schools. She also taught Spanish and French at Union and Sand Springs Public Schools. Martha retired in 2000 after teaching 25 years.

Martha had several hobbies and pastimes. She loved playing Bunko and Bridge. She love the ladies she played with and enjoyed their company immensely. Martha also loved to read. She belonged to several book clubs over the years. She always looked forward to the next chapter! Her favorite activity was to travel. It didn’t matter to where, as long as she was on the go. She traveled with family, friends as well as took students on trips. Some of her destinations were Mexico, Central America, Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Greece as well as the United States.

In her later years, Martha was received into the Episcopal Church. As an active parishioner at St. John’s Episcopal Church, she was a member of Daughters of the King. She cherished the friendships she made at St. John’s.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents and spouses. She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Lee Lopez and family of Longmont, Colorado and her cousins, Lloyd Prator of New York City and Robin Davis and family of Tishomingo, Oklahoma. She is also survived by a group of folks whom she loved like family, who were there for her in her last years: Randy Spencer, Janice Ingle, Beverly Edwards, Mary Brown, and Jill Blackwelder.
