Lou Juana Silvey

Lou Juana Silvey, age 85, died peacefully on November 23, 2014, at her residence in Austin, Texas, surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers. She graduated from Henryetta High School, and attended Oklahoma University where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. At OU she was voted “Big Woman on Campus.” She graduated with a degree in Journalism. She and her husband, Ross E. Silvey, also of Henryetta, made their home in Okmulgee. They later moved to Tulsa, and then to Austin, TX. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader, piano teacher, choir member, historian for the Okmulgee Service League, and church organist. She played the organ for many churches throughout her career, including Henryetta First Christian, Okmulgee First Christian, Yale Avenue Christian in Tulsa, and First Presbyterian in Sand Springs. She was a Chairperson of the American Organist Guild, and a lifelong organ student of Dr. Thomas Matthews, Tulsa. During her retirement, she was a pianist in the Church Symphony at Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin, TX. Besides playing the organ, she worked as a certified medical transcriptionist at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa from which she retired. She was both a fellow and president of the American Association for Medical Transcription. Known for her graciousness and charm, Lou possessed the warm heart, beautiful smile, and ease of conversation to bring joy to any situation. Throughout her life she maintained a keen sense of Christian service, generosity, and a readiness to offer assistance and be a blessing. Lou is survived by her 4 children, Sherri Turner (David), Debra Shulman (John), Jack Silvey (Theresa), and Ross O. Silvey, II (Kari), 8 grandchildren: David Turner, Jr. (Roni), Andy Turner, and Benjamin Turner; Johnny Blue Star (Sara) and Tiara Blue Star, and Cheryl Silvey, Jasmine Silvey, and Jackson.Silvey, and three great grandchildren: Elizabeth Ann Turner, Peter Blue Star, and Ava Marie Turner. She was preceded in death by Ross E. Silvey (husband), Epta Mae and Herbert Wallace (parents), Ed Torrey (stepfather), Ann and Jimmy Sanders (sister and brother-in-law), Louise Pulliam (stepsister), Ross O. and Blanche Silvey (parents-in-law). She will be greatly missed by all who know and love her. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church in Okmulgee at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 with Charlie Green officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta under the direction of the Jackson Funeral Home and Crematory in Okmulgee. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the family will greet friends that afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Jackson Funeral Home in Okmulgee.
