Lois Laverne Gowans

Lois LaVerne (Whittington) Gowans, 92, died peacefully in her sleep on March 31, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born August 20, 1924 in Empire City, Oklahoma to Moses and Anna Laura (Parman) Whittington. Her family moved often because her father was a United Methodist minister. She graduated from Webster High School in 1940. SHe married Gordon Cook, the father of her three children in 1942. She married James Gowans in 1970, the two eloped to Arkansas. She retired from Sears Department Store as a retail manager. She loved to fish, watch sports, and attend the University of Tulsa basketball games, they were season ticket holders for over 35 years. She loved to travel and is a wonderful cook. She became famous for her peach cobbler. She was an avid card player, receiving the honorable title of Life Master at Duplicate Bridge. She was a member of the same Bridge Club for 65 years
LaVerne had a true servants heart. She drove for Meals on Wheels for many years and was always willing to cook for the churches events and played an active role in the church garage sales. She has been a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for nearly 60 years. She belonged to the United Methodist Women's Group. She loved the holidays with family and was a devoted spouse, parent, grandparent and made friends wherever she went.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Gowans and parents, Moses and Anna Laura (Parman) Whittington and sister, Mildred Lucille Woodard.
Survivors include brother, Wesley Eugene Whittington and wife, Betty of Siloam Springs, AR; children, Robert Gordon Cook and wife, Penny of Mobile, AL, Judy Kay Rowell of Tulsa, OK and David Alan Cook and wife, Linda of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, Corrie Simpson and husband, Stephen of Spanish Fort, AL, Hilary M. Devlin of Tulsa, OK, Carl Alan Cook and wife, Jennifer of Edmond, OK, David Aaron Cook and wife, Stacie of Tulsa, OK and Daniel Adam Cook and wife, Sara of Tulsa, OK; great-grandchildren, Anna Kate Simpson, Samantha Nicole Devlin, Eric Sean Devlin, Nicholas James Devlin, Connor Cook, Jackson Cook, Cooper Cook, Coby Cook, Harper Cook, Grayson Cook and Hudson Cook, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be greatly missed.
