Lila Lureen (Neely) Volz age 95 passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at her Muskogee residence with family members by her side.
Lila was born on July 8, 1919 in Bartlett, Kansas to Jessie Louise Johnston Neely and John Edgar Neely. She attended a one-room school house until the eighth grade. At the age of twelve she lived and worked for $1.00/per week on a farm belonging to a relative cooking for field hands. Her weekly wage of $1.00 was sent back home to her parents to help support the family. She married Joseph Andrew Volz on October 7, 1936 in Parson, Kansas. They were married for sixty-three years. In February 1946 Joe returned from Pacific Front World War II and their family moved to Muskogee in May that same year. In Muskogee "Joe & Lila's Malt Shop" was built in April of 1963. Thousands of burgers and fries went out the window until the shop burned in 1977.
Lila held many positions during her life time - she was a babysitter, Girl Scout Leader at School for the Blind, a cook, janitor at school, a quilt maker and a tour guide. Most of all, Lila will be remembered as a friend, prayer warrior, jokester and an encourager.
Lila was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jessie Neely, her husband, Joe (2000), her sisters, Leatha Faye Neely, Leta Marie Neely Conley, Lois Gertrude Neely Graves, her great granddaughter, Myria Lynn Price, great grandson, Trent Price, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Price and her husband, Jim of Fairfax, her son, Gary Volz and his wife, Ann of Tulsa, seven grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, seventeen great great grand grandchildren, her brother, Burle Chalmer Neely of Coffeyville, Kansas, her sister, Normalea Neely Ragel of Garden City, Kansas along with other family members and numerous friends and acquaintances.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Boulevard Christian Church, Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 at Boulevard Christian Church, 1700 W. Shawnee Bypass, Muskogee, Oklahoma. Pastors James McCracken, Steve Moss and
Tony Blumenberg will officiate. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
