Lawrence Oliver Kahbeah, a U.S. Navy Veteran of Okmulgee. Oklahoma passed on from this life into eternity on Friday, May 20, 2022 in the comfort of his own home at the age of 92.
Lawrence was born on December 22. 1929 in Horton. Kansas to Oliver and Bessie "Wakolee" Kahbeah. He grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma at the home place on Moccasin Trail Rd. He loved telling his family the story of him walking to Possum Trot School (District #7) everyday, a mile and a half each way.
After finishing school, he returned back to Kansas to attend Haskell Indian University in Lawrence, KS. He then joined the National Guard and later joined the U.S. Navy. He was a boiler mate in the engine room on the USS McLaughlin. In 1950, he fought in the Korean War on the beach at Inchon Landing.
1950 After serving his country, he started school at Oklahoma State University Technical School in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where he attained a degree in dry cleaning. It was while attending school when he met Priscilla Simmers. Lawrence and Priscilla got married on October 19. 1955 in Muskogee, OK. Lawrence and Priscilla had six children, who they raised in Okmulgee, Oklahoma with the exception of the oldest baby, Arthur, who only lived to be ten days old. Lawrence worked in the dry-cleaning business, as well as working for Indian Health Services.
Lawrence loved sharing stories of his childhood, his military experiences, his love for God and his Sac and Fox culture. After retirement, he enjoyed putting on puppet shows for the children, teaching them about his culture. He was an avid follower of Christ and he served as a layman in the Newtown Methodist Church for most of his adult life. He loved holidays and family get together and never missed an opportunity to share the love of God with others.
What a legacy he leaves behind to all that knew and loved him. Lawrence is survived by his children, Kenneth Kahbeah, Robert Kahbeah, Terri Kahbeah, Kimberly Qualls, Lawrence Kahbeah Jr., Steve and wife Christie Kahbeah, all of Okmulgee, OK. His sister, Celia Goslin, of Kansas. His grandchildren, Eugene Kahbeah, Hondo Kahbeah, Jessica Ingram, Andrea Poole, Megan Kahbeah, Justin Kahbeah, Rebekah Kahbeah. Preston Kahbeah, Stormy Kahbeah and ShyAnne Kahbeah. His great grandchildren, Dakota Kahbeah, Eugene Kahbeah Jr., Joseph Kahbeah, Sonny Kahbeah, Jeremiah Jones, Lanaya Poole, Cymiyah Thompson, Charlie Thompson, Michael Hill Jr., Maxwell Kahbeah and Wyatt Kahbeah.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday May 31, 2022 at Jubilee Christian Center, 12430 N 230 Rd, Okmulgee, Oklahoma. A viewing will be held from 10:00 - 12:00 prior to the service beginning. A graveside service will follow at the Kahbeah Cemetery.
