Kenneth M Hancock

June 6, 1929 — January 6, 2018

A funeral service honoring and remembering the life of Kenneth M. Hancock will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 11 AM at Schaudt's Tulsa Funeral Service Chapel with Minister Tim Pyles officiating. Kenneth M. Hancock, Jr., 88, passed away on January 6, 2018.

Ken was born on June 6, 1929 in San Angelo, TX, to Kenneth M. Sr. and Mamie Helen Rancier Hancock. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1946 as valedictorian of his class and matriculated to Texas Tech University, where he served on Student Council and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in Engineering. In 1952, Ken married Norma Smith. They had three children together: James, Susan, and Paul. Ken and Norma moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2010 to be near family, and were married for 65 years until his death.

He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Germany during the postwar years, and spoke fondly of his time "following the radiator cap" in Europe with Norma. After their return to Lubbock, Ken worked at Kerr Construction for thirty-six years, serving for a time as President of the company. He later worked as a Consulting Engineer on projects in California, Arkansas, New Mexico, Wyoming, and many in Texas.

He was a member of the Texas Congress of Parents & Teachers and served as President of the Parents' Association at Abilene Christian University. He also served as an Elder at both Broadway and Sunset Churches of Christ in Lubbock, as well as on the Board of Directors at the Children's Home of Lubbock and the Sunset School of Preaching. He taught Bible School for many years.

He loved bird hunting, and spent much of his vacation time on hunts with his friends and sons. He also loved a good bit of chocolate and shared the recipe for "dot fudge," which we'll eat every Christmas from now on! He was also passionate about donating blood, and donated over 192 pints of United Blood Services in his lifetime. Although he was never one to complain about much, his grandchildren ironically called him by a name he chose for himself: "Grumpy." Lastly, he was a devoted Red Raider and watched Texas Tech football games right up until the very end of his life.

Ken will be remembered for his tremendous faith in God, his charm, and for making us laugh and sharing his wisdom through a series of often-hilarious truisms.

He is survived by his wife Norma of Tulsa; his children, J.D. Hancock of Memphis (Cindy), Susan H. Kempe of Tulsa (Paul), and Paul Hancock of San Antonia (Kimberly); nine grandchildren (Lindsey Hancock Williamson, William Hancock, Hunter Hancock, John Kempe, David Kempe, Caroline Kempe Reasonover, Henry Hancock, Ann Hancock, and Margaret Hancock); and two great-grandchildren (McClain and Edger Williamson).
Interment will take place Monday, January 15, 2018 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Home of Lubbock, Sunset International Bible Institute in Lubbock, or Hope Harbor Children's Home in Tulsa.
