Kay Janice O'Bryant passed away peacefully on April 27, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma with her dear friend Judy McBay at her side.
Kay was born in St. Louis, MO on October 30, 1937. She was best known for her love and dedication to poodles. She co-owned Elkano Kennels in Joplin, Mo with her mother, Nancy O'Bryant and Dr. Juliette Eliscu. There she was in charge of the daily care and grooming of numerous show poodles, both miniature and standards. It was during this time that she became a professional handler and zig-zagged across the country showing her client's dogs. In the early 80's she relocated to Tulsa where she shared a home with her longtime friend, Betsey Leedy. She showed many poodles to their championship and some to group and Best in Show wins. Kay was admired by all in the dog world and was known for her sportsmanship. She never disparaged another exhibitor's dog or the judge's decision. Her mottos were, "Oh, well" and "Another day, another dog show." Kay was a friend to all and was always willing to help anyone who wanted to learn about grooming or showing poodles. She was a member of the Poodle Club of America, Tri-State Kennel Club of Joplin, and the Joplin Poodle Club. When she was no longer showing in conformation, she began training her beloved "Sunny" in rally and agility. Sunny earned many titles over the years and Kay was especially proud of him. She was an active member of the Companion Dog Training School of Tulsa where she trained and volunteered for many years.
Before Kay's handling career, she held office positions at law firms and insurance agencies. After her retirement from professional handling she returned to office work at the Community Food Bank, National Association of Insurance Women and Thrifty Car Rental.
Kay is survived by many friends who loved her and her poodle, Billy. She was predeceased by her mother Nancy O'Bryant and her father James O'Bryant, and her longtime friend Betsey Leedy.
