Kathleen Sylvia Purser passed away in Edmond on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the age of 89. She was born on May 28, 1934, in Perry, Oklahoma, to her beloved parents, Ross and Opal (Robertson) Hinman.
She was fascinated with weather and aviation. The fascination led her into service with airport tower weather reporting and warnings. She worked for the Federal Airport Administration and the Conoco-Phillips airport tower in Bartlesville, as well as flight services in Houston, Amarillo and Oklahoma City. After retirement, Kathleen dedicated her life to the service of others as a missionary, spreading love and compassion in Romania. It was there she worked directly with the young girls just being released from the orphanages, teaching them sewing and cooking skills. She taught the Bible through an interpreter and even taught them how to read in their own language - not knowing the Romanian language, herself. Her unwavering faith and kind spirit touched the lives of many throughout her years of service.
Upon returning to the United States, Kathleen volunteered as a chaplain with the Tulsa Police Department, driven by her calling to serve others.
Kathleen had a wandering spirit that took her to tropical islands and poverty-stricken nations all in the effort to share the love of Christ to a hurting community. While living in Guthrie she spent countless hours packaging and delivering care packages to the homeless and marginalized.
She was a fiercely independent woman. She knew what she wanted and would go after it full steam. She was a lifelong charismatic Pentecostal who was ordained to preach the gospel throughout the world. This calling never left her.
Kathleen was raised in the oil patches of the early Oklahoma oil boom days of the late 30's and 40's. She would often recall times spent with her parents living in company housing and moving from one patch to the next. Her dad would speak at different churches from time to time and he would always have her come and sing a song in church. She loved to sing of her love of the Lord.
She was 10 years old before a baby sister was born into the family. She was gifted with writing skills. Early on, she wrote magazine articles about different life experiences. She wrote church plays, poems and even completed a book, "The Runaway."
She is preceded in death by her father, Ross Hinman, and her mother, Opal Hinman, her sister, Sharon Louise Price, and her son, Paul C Purser, Jr.
Kathleen leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories with her loving family, her daughter Patricia Harris and son-in-law Rob Harris of Moore, Oklahoma, her son Robert Purser of Arcadia, Oklahoma her grandson, Donald Stanley Harris, and a multitude of friends whose lives she enriched with her presence.
A graveside service to honor Kathleen's life will be held at 1:00 PM on March 22, 2024, at the serene Okmulgee Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM. Both services will be officiated by Pastor Larry Bishop of Dove Ministries.
