Joshua Allen Remer, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, made an unceremonious exit from this life Friday, Oct. 25, 2024 much to the chagrin of all who knew him. He was born Nov. 9, 1980 to Charles and Catherine Remer in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Josh, who occasionally went by "Jay" in recent years (alias?), was 43 years and 351 days old.
Josh spent time in Okmulgee and Morris Public Schools where his reputation preceded him. He graduated from Morris High School in 1999 before matriculating to Northeastern State University. There, he spent many, many, many, many, many years in pursuit of his degree. Josh was a proud member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, which likely contributed to the length of his educational pursuits. It was at NSU where he met and later married Barbara Self who went on to give him his greatest gifts, their sons Chas and Walker.
Josh lived most of his adult life in Tulsa and worked at quite literally every major cellphone provider in the region. Many of his coworkers still speak of his lore. After finally (!!!) acquiring his business degree, Josh rose through the ranks, eventually leveling up to solutions engineer at T-Mobile, an achievement that gave him great pride.
Josh was an avid music enthusiast, excelling at trumpet in high school and later acquiring more guitars than any one person could ever need. Somehow he played them all and shared them with friends and family. (If he left one at your house, please raise your hand.) In addition to playing music, Josh was a bit of a music scholar. Armed with countless playlists, he was always ready with a reference that few would know but many would appreciate with a single listen.
Josh fancied himself an athlete, though few others did. He played soccer and practiced karate as a youngster and swam competitively for a time, sort of. He dabbled in football, but it was baseball that captured his heart, whether he could run the bases or not. Despite Josh being on the team, they made it to the state championships his senior year. His love for sports continued as an adult as he supported Oklahoma football (yikes), Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC. He fell in love with weightlifting in recent years and was beginning to ride bikes with his girlfriend, Lori, a competitive cyclist of whom he was infinitely proud.
Josh lived bigly. His adventurer's heart took him to Iowa (yes, Iowa) and Washington state for a time, but he always returned home to Oklahoma with his family. He was generous with an open and caring heart and an unmatched sense of humor that could make you laugh and blush at the same time. Josh made friends everywhere he went, treasuring them along the way. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his boys. Josh's loss is immeasurable, but his memory - with stories of his shenanigans - will live on.
Josh was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Walker, and paternal grandparents, Ed and Madeline Remer. He is survived by his beloved sons Charles James "Chas" and Walker Ciaran Remer, of Bixby; parents Charles and Catherine Remer, of Okmulgee; sister Jessica Remer, of Tulsa; sister Amity Sparks, of Jay, Oklahoma; his dearest love, Lori McCarty; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless friends.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schaudt's Glenpool-Bixby Funeral Service. The funeral is Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024 at 10 a.m. at the same location followed by burial at 2 p.m. at Round Mountain Cemetery in Vian, Oklahoma.
