John William Hughes, 77, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. He was born on April 8, 1947, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to John and Willa (Hasson) Hughes. John was a proud veteran, having served his country in the National Guard.
John's love story with his wife, Karen Holland, began when they met on a blind date. After a six-month courtship, they married on February 22, 1969, in Duncan, Oklahoma. Together, they shared over 50 years of love, joy, and commitment.
John grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school in 1965. He was an active member of the community, participating in 4-H and Boy Scouts. His life was shaped by his deep faith, being baptized as a young adult at the 10th & Rockford Church of Christ. He later served as a deacon at the Jenks Church of Christ.
John was known for his generosity and his passion for giving back to others. He volunteered his time to many causes and loved helping others, whether through church activities, community projects, or supporting the interests of his kids and grandkids. His hobbies were diverse, reflecting his adventurous spirit. He enjoyed bowling, still photography, remote control airplanes, and listening to classic country and rock music. A motorcycle enthusiast, John spent many joyful hours riding.
John worked at Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) for 35 years as a maintenance mechanic and retired in 2009. His work ethic and dedication earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Hughes; son, John T. Hughes; sister, Jody Eike; granddaughter, Kaylan Hughes; grandson, Keegan Knouse; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Willa Hughes; daughters, Christy Pickens and Laura Nieves; sister, Charlene Hughes; and brother, Doug Hughes.
John's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, whose lives he touched with his kindness, faith, and love. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jenks Church of Christ or a charity of your choice.
John will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in peace.
