John Gordon Bartlett, a longtime resident of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, died at the age of 89, in his home in Ponca City, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on October 28, 1923 in Jerusalem, Arkansas, the son of James Reuben Bartlett and Amy Vivian Reynolds Bartlett. John grew up on what is called, "Jackson Hill" where he attended elementary school at Sunrise School and graduated from Pharoah High in 1941. In He also attended N.Y.A. school to learn welding, and then moved to Richmond, California to work in the shipyards. In 1944, shortly after Pearl Harbor, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his Country. He spent eighteen months of that time in the South Pacific.on a p.t. boat. After his Honorable Discharge he went to Washington, Illinois and worked for Libby in the canning Industry. In 1947 he moved back to Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where he attended A&M School of Technical Training where he completed a course in radio. He worked a short time as a radio repairman at Montgomery Ward, and in 1949 began working at Thompson Pump Company, where he worked for 9 years. In the Spring of 1957 he began working for the U.S. Postal Service, where he was employed until retirement in 1985. After his retirement from the Post Office, he worked for Wall-Mart part time as a greeter, where he loved seeing people from the community. He worked there until 1993. The thing he loved most in life was being with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He left a legacy of love and a passion for God's Word, which he began each and every day with. Mr. Bartlett was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Ashlock Paulsen Bartlett, parents, James Reuben Bartlett and Amy Vivian Reynolds Bartlett, his brothers Raymond Earl Bartlett, James Reynolds Bartlett, and his sister, Juanita Irene Bartlett Hodges. Survivors include his brother, Fred Bartlett of Tulsa, Oklahoma, His children Vivian Bartlett Tackett, Randy Bartlett, Dottie Hoch, Thelma Osborn, and Geneva Barber. His grandchildren, Michelle Bartlett Etzel, whom he raised as his own, Emily Tackett Hubble, Amanda Tackett Martin, Brent Bartlett, Kristy Bartlett Blosch, Kevin Osborn, Kim Osborn Sheppard, Leisa Martin, Jonathan Barber and Robert Martin. and sixteen great grandchildren. A Military graveside service was held at Okmulgee Memorial Cemetery on July 19 at 1:00, with Pastor Shaun Searle officiating. Inlieu of flowers, Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.
