Joseph Michael Schwartz, PhD, a compassionate man with an ever-curious mind and heart full of laughter, passed away on December 26, 2024, in Glenpool, Oklahoma, at the age of 78. “Dr. Joe”, as many called him, was born on July 3, 1946, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Joseph and Edna (Kelly) Schwartz. Joe grew into a man known for his kindness, wit, and ability to connect with everyone he met.
A retired psychologist, Joe devoted his career to helping others navigate life’s obstacles. And, his 30+ years of sobriety, which he faithfully embraced and practiced daily, provided him the perspective and empathy to gently help so many during his lifetime facing similar challenges. His warm personality, empath, and sharp sense of humor left lasting impressions on all who knew him.
Joe leaves behind his loving wife, Merrily, of 42 years. Together they shared a family that includes his daughter, Sarah Schwartz (husband Blake Surbey); stepchildren Merry Stambaugh (husband David), Kirk Hamilton, and Amy Cole. He was a proud grandfather to Harper and Jude, and step grandfather to Bryttani, Paige, Cameron, Kyle and Kynlee. Joe also is survived by his sister, Deborah Morgan; his niece and nephews Lucy, Joe, Michael, and their children; and many, many cousins, aunts, and uncles. Joe was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Anne Fox, and his parents, Joe and Edna.
Joe was a man of many interests. He loved science, Irish music and culture, and discussions about religion and spirituality. He also was a devoted viewer of tv basketball games and history programs. Joe rarely met a nonfiction book he wouldn’t read, and he was an avid letter writer, even sending out a weekly letter he named “Fresh Air” (like the NPR news show) to a small group for more than twenty years.
Joe excelled at maintaining strong connections with family and friends. He loved a conversation with nearly anyone, wove a good tale, and cracked many a cringe worthy jokes. His legacy therefore is one of laughter, kindness, love, and intellectual curiosity.
Joe will be deeply missed by family and friends and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
