James Warren Laswell, born March 26, 1929, in Neodesha, Kansas, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at 95. He was the son of Earl Laswell and Mary (Norman) Hush.
James spent nearly his entire life in Neodesha, building a legacy of hard work, creativity, and love for his family. He began his career in accounting at Standard Oil Company until its closure, after which he became a true jack-of-all-trades. James worked at an ice plant and mastered countless skills throughout his life, always willing to tackle any challenge.
He was passionate about gardening, cultivating fantastic vegetable gardens that reflected his care and dedication. James was also a talented photographer who captured beautiful moments and developed and painted his photographs with artistic flair.
James was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly squirrel hunting. He proudly rode his Harley motorcycle, relishing the freedom of the open road. As a Church of the Nazarene member, James valued deep discussions, especially those involving politics. He was a critical thinker and chess enthusiast, adept at fixing anything. Long before recycling gained popularity, James exemplified resourcefulness, creatively reusing and repurposing items.
In 1983, Jim, Vivian, and Kim-their recent high school graduates-headed to California with a job offer. In short order, Jim accepted an accounting job and returned to Kansas to pack up for the move to Long Beach. A few years later, Jim and Vivian returned home from their California adventure.
The last decision to leave Neodesha and move to the University Village Retirement Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, came in 2016. Jim became Vivian's primary caregiver as her battle with dementia made it necessary to move to The Linden Memory Care at Stonehaven Square.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian, his son, Greg, and his sister, Norma (Laswell) Barrett. His children survive him, Steven Laswell (Rita) and Kim Laswell; his daughter-in-law, Bobbie Laswell; his grandchildren, Greg Laswell Jr., and Danielle Bolster (Jeff), Stephanie Laswell, Monica Laswell, Melanie King, and his niece, Vickie Erdman. He also leaves great-grandchildren Anna and Luke, Maggie, Nolan, Levi, Max, Charlie, Kalen, Simon, Olivia, Judah, and Salem.
James will be remembered as a thinker and a doer. He leaves a legacy of hard work, resilience, and love that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Jim's life will be conducted on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Neodesha Church of the Nazarene.
