James Doyle Martin

April 17, 1929 — September 6, 2022

James Doyle Martin, 93, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

James was born on April 17, 1929.

James was a man of God! Born on a small farm in Scott, Louisiana, he

was raised in faith by his parents, Carmen Hebert Martin and John

Martin, Sr. The love of God they planted in him became the driving

force in his life. He loved God, his family, and his country. He

graduated from Scott High School. While attending SLI to obtain a

degree in agricultural engineering, he enlisted in the Louisiana Army

National Guard. He served his country faithfully. James was company

commander on active duty at Fort Polk, Louisiana during the Berlin

Crisis. He retired from the military as chief aid to the adjutant general of

Louisiana with the rank of Major. James' engineering career also

prospered. James was promoted from district engineer to area engineer,

then to assistant state engineer while serving in Louisiana and South

Carolina. He retired from the Soil Conservation Service as chief

engineer for the state of Florida. While attending a boxing match in

Scott, he met Stella Griggs who would become his beloved wife of 61

years. They married in 1951 and their family quickly grew as they had

five children in 4 ½ years. James was a doting father who taught his

children how to live faith-filled, productive, joyful lives. He always

longed to return to his roots and was able to buy his farm, Rainbow

Acres, in Cecilia, LA after he retired. James was a man of service,

volunteering for Hospice of Acadiana and serving in a leadership

position for Come Lord Jesus for over 20 years. One of his greatest joys

was assisting at St. Joseph Church as sacristan, lector and extraordinary

Eucharistic minister for many years. He lived in Cecilia until April of

2022 when he went to stay with Ginger and Alan in Tulsa, OK. James

was a joyful man to the very end. Even though he struggled with

Dementia, he thanked God daily (and many times a day) for his

wonderful life. He modeled for all how to live and how to die, with

complete and utter faith in God's will. We take comfort in knowing that

all his earthly travails have come to an end as he now rests in the arms of

Our Good and Loving God.
