Imelda Vivar

Imelda de la Luz Vivar was born one of five children to Juan and Elvira in Guatemala City, Guatemala on May 21, 1942. She spent her days helping to care for her siblings, and running the family business, a storefront in Guatemala City where "Mamaía" and "Papa Juan" sold food and provided tailoring services.

She embodied character and conviction in everything she believed in, including participating in protest marches in the streets of Guatemala, her family and her faith. These qualities are what stood out to Obdulio Vivar when he walked into her family's store and what prompted him to pursue her and convince her to marry him on September 30, 1962. She followed him throughout Guatemala and later to Skiatook, Oklahoma, ultimately settling in Tulsa.

For nearly 62 years they raised a family including Erick (Vianey) Vivar, Corina (Marco) Estrada, Omar (Kristin) Vivar and Mauricio (Adrienne) Vivar, and later their 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. Every chance "Tita" got she loved sharing to anyone and everyone she met that they started as a family of 6 and grew to 30. She was one of the first to hold each of her grand and great-grandchildren. Her home in Tulsa is a shrine to her family, where she proudly displayed the artwork and school photos of her children, her grands and her greats.

Tita passes on her love of family, Westerns, John Wayne, James Dean and nature documentaries. Tita was famous for her tamales, making large batches of them each Christmas and transporting them across state lines. Her favorite animals were elephants, like in elephant families, she was the matriarch of a large herd. She showed compassion for all her members, provided a calming presence and often lightened the mood in tense times. She amassed a small collection of elephant artwork and statues throughout her life.

Her family included members of Iglesia Bíblica Bautista, where she adopted many of the children as her own.

She is predeceased by her parents Juan and Elvira and her brother and sister Ramón and Chiquí. Left with fond memories and her deep and abiding love are her husband, Obdulio; her siblings, Vidal and Elva; her grandchildren Melissa Estrada Reese (Ryan Reese) of Norfolk, Gabriela Estrada-Schaefer (Michael Schaefer) of Virginia Beach, Luis Estrada (Matthew Dalton) of Norfolk, Kendra Jacobs (Josh) of Owasso, Ryan and Jordan Vivar of Collinsville, Aiden and Quinlan Vivar of Sevilla, Spain; Karla Toledo Watson (Brad) of Sapulpa; Maya and Erika Vivar of Tulsa; and her great-grandchildren Emmaline and Margo Reese, Sabine and Aurelia Schaefer, and baby Jacobs, on the way. Included among the wonderful traits she passed on are her love of cooking, holding your wrist instead of your hand, and her love of creatures great and small.

She was a world traveler, visiting her grandchildren throughout the country and collecting magnets through each of the states she and "Tito" visited. She also ventured to Spain, Portugal, and made many trips back to Guatemala throughout her life.

She was deeply loved by her family far and wide and will be equally missed.
