Helen “Joanne” Weatherford, former teacher, sorority advisor and longtime Tulsan, died Sunday of complications from a stroke and a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She was 82.
A Stroud native, Joanne lived in Tulsa continuously since 1963. She was a teacher for Tulsa Public Schools, and later an advisor to the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter at the University of Tulsa.
Joanne and her husband Carl were among the earliest members of Asbury United Methodist Church when they joined in 1964, and she was proud to have taught Asbury’s second-grade Sunday school for nearly 25 years.
She was born Helen Joanne Goff on Oct. 18, 1933 to Percy and Leota Goff. She was raised in Stroud and graduated from Stroud High School in 1951 and Oklahoma A&M (now OSU). She married Carl L. Weatherford on June 15, 1957 and the two were married 55 years before his death in August 2012.
She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and the Tulsa chapter of the National Panhellenic Organization.
She is survived by a son, Mike, daughter-in-law Joan and grandaughter Gillian, all of Boulder City, NV.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3rd in the Mason Chapel at Asbury Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations in her memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. http://www.nationalmssociety.org/Donate
