Galler Helen Jean, age 82, passed away March 17, 2008, in Tulsa, OK. She was born in Dalhart, Texas, on October 28, 1925. Helen attended elementary and high school in Fort Worth, Texas. She received her Dietetics degree from Texas College for Women. After interning in Seattle, Washington, she took a job at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, as the manager in food service. While at Purdue, she met John Galler of Hobart, Indiana. They were married on December 30, 1950, in Fort Worth, Texas. Upon settling in Hobart, Helen became active as a volunteer in many organizations during and after raising five children. Helen was active in her sorority Phi Beta Psi, where she held the position of president of the associate chapter Theta Rho. She helped start a Domestic Violence Shelter for women in Hobart. She was also a member of Kiwanis and helped in their many projects. Helen unselfishly gave her time as a volunteer at Hobart's St. Mary's Medical Center where she worked in the gift shop. She also was an active member of the Hobart Industrial and Economic Development Commission (HIEDC) and was instrumental in helping revitalize Hobart's Lake George waterfront into an attractive park atmosphere. In the year 2000, Helen was recognized for her outstanding volunteer efforts and awarded Citizen of the Year by St. Mary Medical Center. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents Ephram and Kate (Morrison) Hill, and grandson Nicholas Galler. Helen is survived by her five children: Carol Horan, David Galler (wife Marivi), Laurie Broadland (husband Dick), Mike Galler (wife Cherie), Mary Galler-Sanchez (husband John), six grandchildren: Michael Brandon Galler, Dylan and Lacey Broadland, Isaac Horan, David Jr and Samuel Galler, sisters Pat Richardson (husband Gerald), Beverly Hoover, Mary Sue Leatherwood, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Helen will be greatly missed and long remembered as a loving wife, mom, grandmom, aunt, friend and the best rum cake baker ever.
Visitation will be held Wednesday March 19, 2008 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Schaudt's Glenpool Funeral Service.
A private family service will be held for Helen.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in Hobart, Indiana, on June 14, 2008, 1:30-3:30pm, at Rees's Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association, Good Shepherd Hospice of Tulsa or to a charity of your choice.
