Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Antrim passed peacefully on September 26, 2018 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Betty was born the only child of Alys and Derwood Darling in Decorah, Iowa. After graduating from Decorah High School she attended the University of Iowa where she played the trombone in the marching band. When the family then moved to Boulder, Colorado, Betty continued her studies at the University of Colorado where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design and a Masters of Arts in Fine Arts. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Betty married Thomas Theotokatos in 1956 in Boulder, Colorado. They had two daughters, Jane (Purser) and Kris (Miller).
Betty used her creative skills as an interior decorator for several years and subsequently served as the slide curator in the Art Departments at the University of Colorado, Boulder and San Jose State University. While at San Jose State University Betty was a member of the Visual Resources Association and served as the Chair of the Membership Committee. In April 2000 she received a Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the association.
Fighting for the underdog, Betty supported numerous causes, championing the welfare of those less fortunate, even traveling to Mexico to help build houses for the poor. Her beautifully manicured yard and gardens reflected her love of gardening. A Mona Lisa enthusiast, she amassed an extensive collection of Mona Lisas, from socks, to mugs, to playing cards, to T-shirts. Betty enjoyed exploring other countries and cultures. She traveled throughout Europe, Japan and North Africa, and contributed to an archeological excavation in Tunisia. Betty was committed to preserving many forms of history She served as a member of the Boulder Landmarks Board (where she received an Award of Merit for her contributions) and the San Jose Landmarks Commission.
A true child of God, Betty’s strong and unwavering faith sustained her throughout her life. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was a source of great joy, and her devotion to her family is unparalleled. A thoughtful, generous woman, she was a friend to all and an inspiration to many.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Jane and Kris, her grandsons Travis (Purser), Luke (Miller), and Nicholas (Miller), her granddaughter Austin (Tollette) and her great-granddaughters Sophie (Tollette) and Madelyn (Tollette).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Fellowship Lutheran Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
