Dr. Silvie Louis Alfonso, age 78, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2009 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Dr. Alfonso was born May 18, 1931 in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania to Silvie D. Alfonso and Antoinette (Maino) Alfonso. He graduated from Ellwood City High School in 1949. He continued his education at Allegheny College and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, receiving his Doctorate in Medicine. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta at Allegheny College and Sigma Nu Fraternity while attending University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, along with a fellowship in cardiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. He also taught at University of Miami School of Medicine in Coral Gables, Florida and practiced medicine for eighteen years in Miami prior to moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1974.
Dr. Alfonso was a Professor of Family Practice at OU Medical School in Tulsa. He also worked as a company physician for Texaco Oil Company, Medical Care Associates of Tulsa and Warren Clinics before he retired in 2002. Shortly thereafter, his love for medicine and patients compelled him to come out of retirement, and he began working for the VA Hospital in Muskogee before retiring in 2008. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of the Oklahoma Academy of Family Practice and the Tulsa County Medical Society. During his years of professorship and practice, he received numerous awards and honors from both colleagues and students and was dearly loved by his patients, colleagues, family and friends. Dr. Alfonso was preceded in death by his parents: Silvie D. and Antoinette Alfonso and his brother: Earl Alfonso.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Whittenberg Alfonso of Tulsa; his son: Silvie George Alfonso and his wife, Carole of Dallas; his daughter: Margaret Ann Alfonso; his sisters: Janice Mundo of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, Alice Cosentino of Hudson, Ohio, Dolly Macejko of Poland, Ohio; his grandchildren: Madeline Elizabeth and Silvie Jackson Alfonso, daughter and son of George and Carole, along with other family members, friends, colleagues and acquaintances.
Memorial services will be 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010 at Tulsa Bible Church, 5838 S. Sheridan Road, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reverend James Johnston will officiate.
