Dr. Orland Sherer Lee was born October 2, 1923 in Blackwell, Oklahoma on North "A" Street to Harland A. Lee and Ava Mae Sherer. He graduated from Blackwell High School in 1941 where he went to Boy's State while wrestling on the B team and played center on the Yanigans. Blackwell had 2 1/2 teams which included their 2 teams and the Yanigans. After high shcool he attended NOC and then Oklahoma A& M until he enlisted in the Air Corps for WWII in 1943. Orland married Ruey Jean Sherbon on November 19, 1944 in Ponca City. Their son Jeffrey Gordon was born March 8, 1946. He reported to active duty at Ft. Sill followed by the Waco Army Flying School and then completed his advanced pilot training in LaMesa, Texas. That's where they found holes in their eardrums. His military career continued on to Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls and onto Camp Crowder in Neosho, Missouri where he was medically discharged. He then returned to Blackwell and began working at the John Deere dealership as manager of the store. He oversaw all of the operations with Orland and Frank Farr working as his mechanics. He worked there for 22 years. At age 43, he sold the John Deere dealership and went back to college at NOC. He graduated with an associates in 2 years which he transferred to OSU and earned his BA in Accounting in 1970 followed by his Masters degree in 1972 and his Ph.D. in 1978. He worked as a graduate assistant throughout graduate school. Dr. Orland Lee pursued a career as a professor moving to LaMar University in 1975 at the age of 52 where he taught until 1979. He then taught at SWTS in San Marcos until his retirement in 1994 at the age of 70. They moved to the Hawthorne Retirement Village in Leesburg, Florida where they enjoyed 6 years of sunshine, travel, and boating. They moved to Stillwater in 1999 to enjoy OSU sports and be nearer to family.
In retirement he enjoyed Sudoku and crossword puzzles completed in ink. Orland loved OSU sports and all sports. He drove OSU wrestlers to their out of town matches in the days when OSU sports didn't have the budget for travel. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a lifetime OSU Alum, and a lifetime SWTSU Alum, member of the Blackwell American Legion along with his father and son. He loved to read and always mowed his own lawn. He requested nothing on his gravestone.....just to be sprinkled over a lake somewhere. He loved to travel in retirement. He accomplished 12-15 trips across the United States and Canada.
He is survived by his only son Jeff G. Lee and his wife Cheryl; two grandchildren Tracy Lee Emmons and her husband Matt Emmons, and Amanda Lee Meadows and her husband Major Alan Meadows; four great grandchildren J.J. Emmons, Eli Emmons, Katie Meadows, and Zach Meadows; along with his sisters, nieces, and nephews.
No formal services will be planned. The family will receive guests at a visitation scheduled Monday, June 9, 2014 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at the Schaudt-Teel Funeral Service in Tulsa.
