Donald Carl Schulz

September 7, 1930 — July 17, 2016

Donald Carl Schulz came into this world on September 7th, 1930. He was the 5th of 7 children born to Edward and Myrtle Schulz. He was raised in Downers Grove, IL and graduated from Downers Grove Community High School in 1949. Don joined the United States Navy after high school and served during the Korean War on an aircraft carrier and in the Philippine Islands. He married Margaret Earl in 1954 and they started their life together in a small apartment in Downers Grove. Don and Marge raised 5 kids in a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house in Woodridge, IL. They moved to Broken Arrow, OK in 1976 and made many wonderful friends there. In 1989, Don and Margaret moved to St. Peters, Mo where they became well known in the community. They returned to Broken Arrow last year to be close to family.

Don enjoyed the great outdoors and spent many years camping, fishing and traveling the country on family outings while pulling a pop-up camper. When they lived in Woodridge, he and Margaret also chaperoned the church youth group on the annual camping trip to Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin.

Don was a master mechanic and spent his entire career in the automotive field. He owned and operated two service stations in Downers Grove in the late 50s and early 60s. He was a field engineer for Stewart Warner, Bada Company, Armstrong Rubber, and Moog Automotive. Don retired in 1992 to spend more time travelling and visiting with family and friends.

Don enjoyed many years as a ham radio operator and CB radio enthusiast operating under the handle " Dudley Durite". Don was known by several other names, as well, including Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Schulzie, and Donald Duck.

One of Don’s legacies that his children are thankful for is his insistence that they attend worship and Sunday School and confirmation class every week.

Don went Home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 17th. He was preceded in death by his son, Rick, his brother, Richard, and his parents. He leaves behind Margaret, his wife and partner of over 60 years, 4 children, 3 sisters and 2 brothers , 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren (#6 is due in September), 19 nieces and nephews, and innumerable friends from everywhere he lived.
He will be remembered most for his willingness to lend a hand to repair most anything, his smile and his laughter.
