Dinah Marie Mitchell (Salmon) 77 passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Woodland Skilled Nursing and Therapy of Natural causes. Dinah faced her death with loved ones nearby.
Dinah was born on March 18, 1947, to Mac (Murry) and Mary Dennis Salmon in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
After graduating from high school in Okmulgee, she married Elton Eugene Mitchell Jr. (Gene) in Pickens, South Carolina on August 18, 1966. While Gene attended Clemson University earning his PHD in Systems Engineering, Dinah worked as Quality Control at a nearby Dress Factory. Gene accepted a job with the United States Naval Academy as a Weapons and Systems Professor. This moved the family to Annapolis, Maryland until he retired in 2001.
Dinah and Gene had their first child on October 7, 1970, Elton Eugene Mitchell III. On December 29, 1973, Dinah and Gene had their second child John Wesley Mitchell. Heather Ann Capwell born December 20, 1972, became a member of the Mitchell family in 1987 and was the officially adopted daughter of Dinah and Gene in September 2004.
After bearing her children, Dinah chose to raise her family. She was very active in her children's lives by volunteering at school functions, activities and field trips. She became a Cub Scout Den Mother and excelled at leading local scouts in task and crafts that enhanced their lives and helped them to develop confidence and appreciation of nature in their everyday living.
Dinah loved nature and had a passion for gardening. She maintained a vegetable garden for many years in support of her family. Later, her gardening focused on flowers and minor landscaping to improve their family home. She eventually advanced to Koi Pond gardening. Dinah's love of animals was unmatched and lead her to spending large amounts of time and money to provide medical aid for animals in need.
She became known for her farm of "welfare animals" as her family came to refer to it. Dinah believed in spay and neutering of animals paying for many abandoned animals to be fixed and often was caring for animals in need.
