David Dwayne Luelf was born on November 6, 1954 in Rogers, Arkansas to Edward August Henry Luelf and Opal Ozelle Breeding. They lived two more years in Rogers before moving to Baxter Springs, Kansas for a short time. In 1959 they moved to Ochelata, Oklahoma where they lived until his father's passing in 1972.
Growing up in Ochelata was every child's dream. There was never a dull moment as he was surrounded by a group of boys from the church he attended and the neighborhood. Packing up a lunch and heading out to Jake's pond was one of the highlights. Riding bikes down graveyard hill and coasting to the railroad tracks was another favorite. He also enjoyed watching a good Western with the Thurman's! If the phone rang while David was there, he would automatically run out the front door. If it wasn't his mother they would holler out, come on back! He had countless stories he shared from fun and exciting things with Wayne and Larry Waits. Their parents, Bob and Claudine Waits, had a great impact on David. All in all, David's childhood was filled with wonderful memories and lots of friends.
His oldest sister Cecelia married in 1963. He and his other sister, Nancy, loved to visit Cecelia and Stephen during the summertime. He also would spend a week every summer with his grandmother, Susie Breeding. This helped build strong family relationships that has been carried down through the years. One would never believe that there was a great sibling rivalry between him and Nancy. One of her favorite stories to tell is when she pinned David down and wouldn't let him up until she had figured out a way of escape because he was going to come up fighting! David was a competitor in every activity he attempted. Not giving your best was unacceptable. In later years that same tenacity and desire to win helped him in his battle of 15 years with brain cancer. He fought hard to the end.
As David grew to be a teenager, he attended the Independence Bible School in Independence, Kansas. There he met the love of his life, Glenda Bass. David and Glenda were married in 1974. He attended Independence Junior College in Independence, KS and Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. David graduated with a Master's Degree in 1978. He began his teaching career in Welch, OK where he taught Math for three years. Ryan, their son, was born in 1980. David was so happy when Ryan was born; he kept saying, we did it, we did it! It's a boy! He wanted the Luelf name to be carried on! In the summer of 1981 they moved to Tulsa, OK and David became the principal of the Bible Fellowship Learning Center. So many memories were made while in the Tulsa area. Eric was born in 1983. The boys enjoyed the benefits of living close to their Aunt Cece and Uncle Steve. David spent a few years with Combined Insurance before eventually returning to the classroom. He taught in the Union Public School System and Pawhuska Public schools before his retirement in 2016. He was able to substitute for the Skiatook Public Schools after retirement and enjoyed that time immensely.
David loved St. Louis Cardinal baseball. Glenda and David were avid fans. There wasn't a better place to be on a hot summer night than Busch Stadium in St. Louis MO. There are so many wonderful experiences from the St. Louis trips; such as birthdays, anniversaries, Father's Day and numerous other occasions. Taking the grandkids to the ballpark along with visits to Six Flags and the City Museum became some of his fondest memories. David's greatest treasures were his seven grandkids and all the joy they brought into his life.
Surviving family members include his wife, Glenda; his children and grandchildren, Ryan and Caroline; Addison, Atlanta, Arthur and baby boy Luelf (due to arrive November 6, 2021) of Jenks, OK; Eric and Brooke; Aniya, Evan, Jaylen and June, of Owasso, OK; two sisters, Cecelia Douglas and Nancy Johnson and husband, Duane; four nieces Rachelle Ford and husband, Randy; Janelle Goins and husband, Lewis; Sonya Seniva and husband, Gary, and Melinda Davolt and husband, John; seven great-nephews and three great nieces.
