Cheryl Rae Mathews

Cheryl Rae (Threadgill) Mathews passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at the age of 66 years. She was born on July 26, 1954 in Joplin, MO to her parents, Billy and Nettie (Johnson) Threadgill.

Cheryl grew up in Kansas City, MO on Weatherby Lake and attended Parkhill Highschool and Parkhill Baptist Church. Growing up she enjoyed many different activities, she was active in French Club, Marching Band, Cheerleading, and Debate in school. Cheryl also took organ lessons from the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City.

After she graduated from high school, she attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. Cheryl graduated with honors with a degree in communications and a minor in music. She moved out to Stockton, California with her parents and her sister, Crystal.

At Michigan Heights Baptist Church in Stockton, she met the love of her life, Craig Mathews, and they were married on July 11, 1981 in Stockton, CA. Cheryl and Craig moved to Oklahoma to manage an OTASCO store in Disney, Oklahoma. Shortly after, Craig took a job with the Tulsa Fire Department and Cheryl started teaching music lessons. Her son, Drew and her daughter Carly, were born during this time. Cheryl went back to school and received her teaching certificate from Northeastern State University. Cheryl taught first and second grade in Union Public Schools for twelve years. She was an excellent teacher and much loved by her students and their families.

Cheryl was very creative and excelled at arts and crafts. She loved to write, draw, paint, sing and make music, especially for the Lord. Cheryl had begun writing several short stories and was working on a children’s book. But her greatest joy was being a Mother and beloved Nana. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and would store up her energy to pour into good times together with them. Cheryl was a constant source of encouragement to her family and was generous and giving to everyone she knew.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Nettie Threadgill.

Cheryl leaves many loving memories with her family, husband of 39 happy years, Craig Mathews; son, Drew Mathews and wife Veronica; daughter, Carly Franklin and husband Chance; sister, Rhonda Colton and husband John; sister, Crystal Blythe; grandson, Noah Mathews, granddaughter, LucyJune Mathews, granddaughter, May Mathews, granddaughter, Emma Franklin, and grandson, Jack Franklin; along with many other loving relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held 5pm-8pm Thursday evening, January 28, 2021. Funeral services will be 11am Friday, January 29, 2021 at Schaudt Tulsa Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Matt Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The funeral service will be live-streamed for those unable to attend.
