Charley Wallace Harjo Sr. was born December 29, 1941 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Amos and Alice Harjo. He departed on September 16, 2020 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 78. Charley attended Jones Academy in grade school, Sequoyah Indian Boarding School, Okmulgee Tech and Seminole Jr. College. Charley proudly served in the Army pvt 2- department ARNG Infantry. He was stationed in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. Charley worked for Canadian Valley co-op Tulsa Creek Bingo and mail carriers before retiring. Charley was Coordinator of Creek Fiddle Dance group.
Charley was fluent in original Creek language. When he was younger he enjoyed racing cars in Denver, Colorado. Charley was a football fan of the Denver Broncos and Oklahoma Sooners. Charley traveled to various Pow-wows as a gourd dancer, traditional dancer, along with singing with the Greyhorse singers, Redland and White Fishbay. He was a member of the Seminole Nation Honor Color Guard who attended funerals of military service members. Charley then formed the Fiddle dance group. He remembered his elders dancing to this and started teaching family and friends. Charley and his group traveled around the United States dancing for people. At times Charley participated in traditional Stomp dance.
Charley was preceded in death by his father Amos Harjo, his mother Alice Harjo, his son Victor Harjo, his wife Naomi (Dixon) Harjo, his uncle and aunts Maxey and Mollie Buster, John and Nancy Buster and his step-sister Priscella Harjo.
Charley leaves behind his daughter Gwendolyn Harjo of Glenpool, Oklahoma, his daughter Cheryl (Larry) Staller of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, his son Charley W. Harjo of the home, his half brother Elmer Harjo Jr., his special friend Dana Tiger, step daughter Felicia Flake and twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Services for Charley Harjo will be held at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Schaudts Okmulgee Chapel. A graveside service will being at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at Seminole Hitchitee Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Wendall Williams, Michael Harjo, Michael Haney, Mitchell Simmons, Larry Staller, and Justin Screechowl. Honarary Pallbearers are Ira Kaulay Jr, Eddie Screechowl, David Haney Jr, Ed Screechowl, Bradley Sandoval and Jake Staller.
