Cathie Jean Tierney, age 79 of Kiefer, OK passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, with family by her side, 11 days after suffering a brain aneurysm in her sleep.
Survived by Daughter Lori and (Mark Dolan) of Kiefer, OK, Grandchildren Molly and Jake Dolan, Brother Greg and (Kim Thoen) of Watertown, MN and Sister Julie and (Phillip Kiesner) of Ripley, OK along with many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her Husband Tim, Sister Bonnee Reay, and Parents Don and Harriet Thoen.
Cathie was born in Minneapolis MN on March 14, 1946, to Don and Harriet Thoen.
Cathie was always a little horse crazy and after repeatedly begging for a horse, her parents finally bought her one when she turned 12. They would drop her off where he was boarded and she stayed all day. Eventually, her dad bought Hazeltine Stables and boarded close to 100 horses for all the city kids. Later, this land was sold and is now home to the Hazeltine National Golf Club which hosted multiple US Open and PGA Championships.
Her passion never wavered, going on to win 2 MN State Barrel Racing Titles, MN State Rodeo Queen and Miss Horsemanship of America in Las Vegas.
In 1966, she met and married a cowboy, Tim Tierney. The two went on to rodeo for a number of years and in 1971, they had a daughter, Lori, who continues the horse crazy passion with her family.
Cathie spent most of her life in Young America, MN, but moved to Oklahoma in 1999 to be with her daughter, Lori. She continued to attend nearly every race, rodeo and later, any of her grandchildren's passions and talents that she could. Cathie's spirit can be seen, not only in her daughter, but her grandchildren as well. The horse craze passed to her granddaughter Molly, in particular, but her other passion of gardening is seen daily in her grandson Jake, as Lori, Jake and Cathie maintained an outside garden and greenhouse. The day before her aneurysm that Sunday morning, Cathie attended a race with her family and made an evening trip to Lowe's on a hunt for new plants.
Cathie helped on the ranch daily with a work ethic that never aged. She had her priorities in the right place, putting God first and spending hours in scripture.
Mark made a simple statement about Cathie last week.
He said, "Cathie always put herself last." She would always help in anyway she could.
