The family of Betty Rowland Young grieves her passing on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. She passed peacefully at the age of 91 in the home of her daughter Beth Howard and son in law, Les.
Betty was born on February 10, 1930 in Durant, OK. Her parents, Charles and Vera Rowland, were lifelong Tulsans and educators. After graduating from Tulsa Central, Betty attended Oklahoma State University where she received both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education. While there she was active in educational organizations and her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. She held several offices and gained lifelong friends.
After a few years of teaching primary school in Virginia and El Paso, she returned to Tulsa. There, Betty, Mac Young, and her daddy, Charles Rowland, built what would be the legacy "Betty Rowland Nursery School." As Owner and Director for over 6 decades, her preschool programming set a standard of excellence. She also built and operated Peoria Child Care and the Yale Bowl Nursery. Betty not only educated preschoolers in Tulsa, she also set the standard for early childhood education in Oklahoma. Throughout her career she touched the lives of over 15,000 children. She was loved by students, families, and teachers. Her contributions to the field of early childhood education in the state of Oklahoma include helping to develop and write the standards for licensing, consulting on work-based day care centers, and helping to create and hold offices in several local, state, and national organizations.
Betty traveled the world from Egypt and China to Russia and beyond. She was an avid collector of antiques that included iron soldiers, marbles, toys, and more. She had booths in several markets in Tulsa.
More than anything Betty loved her family. She passed on a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to her daughter Beth, granddaughter Aerin, and a plethora of family and friends. Their loss is great; as Winnie the Pooh said, "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
Betty is survived by daughter Beth Howard and husband Les; granddaughter Aerin Bailey and husband Raini; great-grandsons Eli and Roland; granddaughter Juanita O'Hern and husband Patrick; great-grandchildren Joshua, Jessica, and Xavier; grandson Daniel Howard and fiancé Karena Tkack; great-grandson Tru; niece Katherine Mook; sister Peggy Person; niece Karen Brownfield and husband John; niece Amy Person and husband Gary Powell; niece Kathleen Person; cousin Joel Carr; family friends Mac and Suzanne Young along with many other loving relatives and a host of friends.
