Betty May (Shackelton) Martin was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to loving parents Byrde and Joseph Shackelton on October 29, 1922. She passed from this life at St. John Medical Center on October 12, 2011 surrounded by loving family members and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother: Bob Shackelton, her sister: Joan Purvine, and her son: Wade Martin. She is survived by her sister, Mary Shackelton Terrill and her husband Robert of Tulsa, OK; brother-in-law, Bruce Martin and his wife Ann of Pipe Creek, TX; brother-in-law, Max Martin of Houston, TX; son, Ed Martin and his wife Janet Kaiser Martin of Oklahoma City, OK; daughter, Mary Martin Tucker and her husband Johnny of Gravette, AR; son, Gene Martin and his wife Diane Wilson Martin of Tulsa, OK; son, Charlie Martin and his wife Phyllis Baldridge Martin of Glenpool, OK; twelve grandchildren: Amanda Martin, Andy Tucker, Chuck Martin, Claire Martin, Heidi Martin Mullings, Holly Martin Church, Jay Martin, Jenny Martin Vincent, Anna Martin Perusse, Levi Tucker, Lindsey Martin Silverberg and Mike Tucker; eleven great-grandchildren: Bailey Church, Bryles Tucker, Caleb Tucker, Cooper Church, Kali Tucker, Karly Tucker, Lily Tucker, Mckensi Tucker, Patrick Church, Taylor Mullings and Trevor Mullings, along with ten nieces, three nephews, one aunt, one cousin and a host of friends. Betty graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1940 and married former classmate George William Martin, Jr. (09/23/1922-12/24/1993) in July 1944. She worked for the government during WWII. On January 2, 1962, she began working for the Viersen Drilling Company in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and continued working for the family business until 2005, a period of 43 years. Betty was always active in her church, and coordinated class reunions for the Class of 1940 for decades. Her life was guided by her faith in Jesus Christ and was focused on her family and friends. She will forever be remembered as a devoted sister, sister-in-law, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. A Celebration of Life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Landing Community Church, 596 West 141st Street, Glenpool, OK. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the church. Arrangements were entrusted to Daniel C. Schaudt of Schaudt's Glenpool Funeral Service & Cremation Care.
